Shortly after the turn of the 21st Century we had the good fortune to discover a brilliantly simple technique for structuring a persuasive message. It is called 4-MAT.
Many people when trying to persuade others can miss the hot buttons that trigger both the emotional and logical reasons necessary to convince people to adopt what they recommend.
If you are in any kind of sales or business develoment role then 4-MAT is for you. It can be used in beauty parades, pitches, one-to-one discussions and negotiations. It is a perfectly simple model to organise your best sales arguments together to make an irrestistable presentation.
You may well have a role which requires you having the ability to Persuade Powerful People without having executive authority (i.e. you are not the boss). If this is the case then getting things done through others through persuasion and influence is essential.
You may well have executive authority and you are the boss and wish to explore a multi-dimensional approach to persuade people to do the things you want to increase commitment and performance.
If the action required of the person or people you are trying to persuade is considerable you will need to structure the message in a logical, considered and inspiring way. By doing so you will make it easy for the listener to say yes and difficult to say no.
All successful politicians, leaders, sales people and public speakers knowingly or otherwise use 4-MAT to shift people's thinking and persuade them to take action.
4-MAT is the product of rigorous research largely based on the teachings of Bernice McCarthy. Bernice is one of history's finest teachers who consistently manages to bring the best out of her students. 4-MAT taps into each individual's preferred learning style ensuring that each and everyone 'gets it' at a conscious and unconscious level
The beauty of 4-MAT is its simplicity which invites you to structure any persuasive message into 4 sequential parts:
These are the first two:
1. the compelling reason why, jn your opinion, the person or people you wish to
persuade should do what you are recommending
2. what specifically it is you want them to do
Once you have mastered the four parts of 4-MAT you will be able to simply and rapidly construct any message you wish to convey into an understandable, logical and persuasive suite of statements and questions
Without 4-MAT you may have already run the risk of using a great deal of energy trying to persuade people to do the things you believe would be good for them and experience the frustration of nothing happening or indeed, worryingly, they do the exact the opposite!
